Hell was a pillar of ecclesiastical tyranny and a weapon in the hands of contending ecclesiastical groups; they’d anathematize first each other with the threat of hell, and then the rest of the world.

If “hell” is real, aren’t the orthodox, who accuse universalists of denying the Word of God, themselves denying the word of God when they tone-down the nightmare of eternal torment by saying that the wages of sin are “separation from God?” or, “spiritual” anguish in a figurative fire? or, annihilation? Do hell-fire believers deny their faith so as not to scare off potential “seekers” and parishioners? Do those who thus mitigate “hell” only prove that the orthodox position is unjust, evil, and undefendable?
